December 21, 2012 – Red Hat is following through on its plans for more activity in the cloud space with the announced acquisition of New Jersey-based vendor ManageIQ for $104 million in cash.

ManageIQ’s enterprise solutions and technology for cloud monitoring, automation and management are expected to be folded into Red Hat’s virtualization portfolio. In a statement on the proposed deal, Red Hat noted that it anticipated ManageIQ’s Hybrid Cloud Operations Management technology to provide additional lifecycle activities such as storage provisioning, compliance, discovery and workload optimization, specifically to Red Hat’s virtualization management lines CloudForms and Enterprise Virtualization. Red Hat Products and Technologies division President Paul Cormier called management “critical” in the enterprise cloud process, and stated that ManageIQ’s tools are expected to “bring the promise of open hybrid cloud a step closer for the industry.”

In early October, the open source vendor made a public announcement that it was seeking out ways to build out the needs of cloud developers, including better on-demand management and broadened access to its JBoss Enterprise Application Platform product.

Privately held ManageIQ has long been a certified Red Hat virtualization partner. ManageIQ CEO Albion Fitzgerald carries a background at other startups, including Telemetrix, scooped up by CA in 1988, and Novadigm, bought out by HP in 2004. Cloud and SaaS acquisitions made the biggest push in the overall information management transaction market in 2012, with expectations of more to come in the year ahead, according to PricewaterhouseCoopers.

The ManageIQ deal is subject to closing conditions, though the two sides have signed a definitive agreement. In the M&A space, Red Hat most recently snatched up integration vendor FuseSource from parent company Progress Software as part of their divesture strategy.
