By Joseph Goedert

President Obama has named Aneesh Chopra as chief technology officer for the administration, and Jeffrey Zients as chief performance officer.

Chopra will promote technological innovation to help meet administration goals for job creation, reducing health care costs and homeland security. Zients, also named a deputy director at the Office of Management and Budget, will work to streamline government processes, cut costs and identify best practices.

"Aneesh and Jeffrey will work closely with our Chief Information Officer, Vivek Kundra, who is responsible for setting technology policy across the government and using technology to improve security, ensure transparency and lower costs," Obama said in his weekly radio address.

Chopra most recently served as Virginia's Secretary of Technology under Gov. Timothy Kaine (D). He previously was a managing director at The Advisory Board Company, a health care best-practices research and consulting firm based in Washington. Zients most recently served as founder of Portfolio Logic, an investment firm, and previously was chair and CEO at The Advisory Board Company.
