May 31, 2011 – Software AG announced a deal for Metismo Ltd., a U.K.-based mobile application development platform provider.

Software AG stated in a news release on the proposed deal that the development and integration capabilities from Metismo would bolster its offerings for real-time, offsite business process management and mobile payment systems.

Clay Richardson, analyst with Forrester Research, says his research shows 38 percent of firms have expectations of delivering process-enabled mobile apps through in-house development, part of the increasing connection between enterprise apps and process context reflected in this acquisition.

“Combining a mobile development platform, like Metismo, with Software AG’s webMethods BPM suite will help boost developer productivity – and lower barriers to entry – for generating process-enabled mobile apps across multiple target mobile devices,” Richardson says.

Matt Green, vice president of product management at Software AG, which oversees the company’s mobile strategy, said the move comes in response to rapid transformations in enterprise computing from mobile technology.

“The Metismo technology solves the complex issue of cross-platform mobile access to the enterprise,” Green said in a news release, adding that the solution provides a launch-pad for mobile productivity.

Metismo’s development platform converts Java into native source code for applications that can run on various mobile devices. The platform also enables data from GPS, audio and video to be integrated within in-house business apps. This app technology is at use in millions of units sold through Apple, Google, Nokia, Blackberry and others, according to a news release.

Metismo was founded in July 2007 and is headquartered in Hampshire, U.K. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

For Software AG, it is the second acquisition with mobile implications in a little more than a week, as it also recently made a deal for in-memory and cloud provider Terracotta Inc.
