September 22, 2009 Aster Data has released the Aster nCluster and nCluster Cloud Edition, which leverages massive parallel processing (MPP) to provide high performance online backup and restore capabilities.
Aster nCluster Online Backups architecture uses a distributed computer cluster made up of backup servers. Massive parallelization excels backup and restore speeds to petabyte scale, compressing data before its sent to the servers and minimizing storage as well as network data transfer requirements.
For data recovery, Asters backup architecture can live separately from the nCluster database or in cloud applications. It also allows for full, incremental or table-level backups.
In the press release, Lenin Gali, director of business intelligence at online file-sharing provider ShareThis, said hed used nCluster to back up 7 TB of data on Amazon Web Services in less than four hours while nCluster was running in production. Aster claims compression ratios of 3x to 12x are typical, depending on the type of data being run.
A recent study by Forrester listed online or remote backup capabilities as a central determinant for the success of software as a service. Online backup, particularly for small and midsized businesses, is an area of strong interest, according to Forrester. A primary concern, however, is the need to cover large amounts of data in a short time frame.
