November 2, 2010 – A new report from health care technology research and advisory firm CapSite covers the state of health information management technology in more than 500 surveyed hospital medical records departments.

3M Health Information Systems holds a 30 percent market share as the primary HIM vendor among surveyed hospitals, with Meditech second at 22 percent. Nine other vendors combine for a total of 39 percent of the primary HIM market, while "other" garnered 9 percent.

The report also details market share in recent selections of various HIM modules.  Leaders include 3M for coding, computer-assisted coding and compliance; HealthPort for RAC in a very fragmented market, McKesson for record management, and Meditech for document management. Respondents also identified their most important attributes when selecting HIM applications and their biggest HIM business challenges.

Forty-one percent of respondents plan to invest in new HIM applications during the next 18 to 24 months, with much of that activity within the next year, according to Burlington, Vt.-based CapSite.

The report, "2010 U.S. Health Information Management Study," is available at no charge for providers, and for $1,500 for others. To request a complimentary report or get information on ordering, e-mail reports@capsite.com.
