IDC attributes widespread adoption of virtualization worldwide to lower short-term capital costs. And with rapid adoption, virtual server sprawl is already a reality for many IT organizations. As a result, IDC expects that 2010 will be a tipping point in the adoption of new management tools and IT policies. Vendors in the virtualization market will need to automate virtual machine management as well as provide a platform for long-term innovation.
"Virtualization is no longer the cool, unproven technology that people are looking into for quick cost saving,” said Brett Waldman, senior research analyst for Software Appliances and Virtualization at IDC. “It has matured into an integral piece of the IT infrastructure."
Waldman went on to say, "The biggest challenge customers will face in 2010 is understanding the path and obstacles they will need to overcome to achieve maximum business value."
