Organizations are moving to the cloud seemingly every day. And many are relying on cloud computing to improve internal efficiencies and boost customer services.

As IDC noted earlier this year, "Cloud services and technologies are no longer simply used to replace ageing or costly on-premises infrastructure and the scene will continue to evolve in the next few years."

Here’s a sampling of some of the more strategic cloud initiatives posted to the Cloud Computing Exchanged in the past year.

Advanced Energy Industries (AE Solar Energy), a maker of power conversion technology used in thin-film plasma manufacturing and solar energy generation, is using Ariba Inc.’s cloud-based applications to streamline its sourcing process and reduce costs.

Ashford and St. Peter’s Hospitals NHS Trust, a U.K.-based healthcare provider, deployed Fiberlink’s MaaS360 software-as-a-service secure mobile device management (MDM) and mobile application management (MAM) offerings. Using MaaS360, Ashford and St. Peter's was able to quickly roll out Apple iPads to its executive committee, providing secure access to board papers and email.

Brisbane Airport Corp. (BAC), the operator and developer of Brisbane Airport in Australia, deployed virtualization technology from Cisco, EMC and VMware to build a private cloud designed to increased business agility and operational effectiveness.

HealthNow New York, the parent company of BlueCross BlueShield of Western New York and BlueShield of Northeastern New York, partnered with Benefitfocus, a provider of cloud-based benefits technology, to provide employers with healthcare enrollment and e-billing technology.

The U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory awarded a contract to Modus Operandi, a provider of information discovery and integration software for the defense and intelligence sector, to develop a secure, cloud-based information-sharing framework.
