IDC’s semi-annual software industry tracker pegged the application development and deployment market to finish 2012 at $80.6 billion, a 3.7 percent increase from last year’s total. Dampening the final tally for this year are shortfalls in anticipated sales, according to IDC.
Looking ahead, IDC researcher Patrick Melgarejo expects the market growth to nearly double to 7.5 percent, or $86.7 billion, in 2013. The shot in the arm of market expansion should come from the background software and solutions from a few of the hotter segments of the information management market.
RDBMS, for one, takes up 34 percent of IDC’s overall application development market share, and is forecast to rank in the “high single-digits” in growth in 2013 and beyond. In lock step with RDBMS growth is data integration and access software, especially as businesses seek out to streamline the flow of data between distributed computing environments, IDC stated. Solutions to improve application performance by managing cache data grew 15.9 percent in the first half of 2012 alone, and IDC predicts more of the same in the years ahead.
From a broader view, application development vendors are finding broader investment in some much hyped production areas. Stephen D. Hendrick, AD&D research group VP at IDC, said in a statement accompanying the forecast that solid growth is expected through 2016 for application markets “aligning with or supporting mobile, cloud, social and big data.”
The IDC tracker follows 330 software vendors from nearly 50 countries in the space, which is grouped under the following market categories: application software; application server middleware; data access, analysis and delivery; integration and process automation middleware; quality and lifecycle tools; structured data management software; and other application development and deployment.
