The National Quality Forum, a voluntary, consensus-based standards setting organization in Washington, has endorsed 70 quality measures that combine data from two or more common electronic sources.

These sources include claims, pharmacy, laboratory and case management registry systems, among others, along with electronic health records and personal health records. The endorsed measures cover 16 conditions, such as bone and joint, cardiovascular disease, asthma and respiratory illness, and diabetes.

The goal is to encourage wider use of electronic systems to measure, report and improve quality of care, while harmonizing physician-level performance measures used by various health insurers.

A National Quality Forum steering committee reviewed more than 200 measures used by private insurers to assess physician performance. More information is available at qualityforum.org/projects/ambulatory_clinically_enriched_data.aspx.
