Informatica Aquires Agent Logic

September 4, 2009 – Informatica Corporation has completed the acquisition of Agent Logic, a complex event processing software provider in a transaction that closed Wednesday.

Informatica, which has traditionally provided data integration software, is expanding from its market base to include an adjacent technology category with the acquisition, according to an Informatica release.

Agent Logic’s CEP software was originally developed for persistent analysis of U.S. defense and national security data. It is designed so business users can specify rules for events and associated actions, enabling enterprises to detect, correlate, analyze and respond to data-driven events, according to Michael Appelbaum, former Agent Logic CEO and current vice president and general manager for Informatica’s complex event processing business unit.

“Operational intelligence is how your business is operating as it is actually happening. And, the events-based foundation of this area is how those events are fired across networks in real time,” said Mark Smith, CEO and senior vice president of Research and Advisory Services of Ventana Research. “A lot of that is a critical set of information that’s required for businesses to be more responsive.”

CEP is a category that has been evolving and developing for many years, according to Smith, but today’s environment calls for corporations to handle data on more frequent basis. As a result, the CEP industry is expected to grow in the next several years.

“Informatica on their part has continued to build out their integration and information management technologies but this acquisition provides them an opportunity to gain access to critical tools for business to harvest events and data more efficiently and optimize specific activities and processes,” Smith wrote in today’s Information Management blog.  “Informatica needed to acquire CEP technology and Agent Logic was a good pick as the real value is actually what their platform and tools enable, which is operational intelligence and is the reason why their customers purchased their products.”

With this new partnership Informatica and Agent Logic will present a thorough end-to-end data integration suite that reaches into new markets, according to Appelbaum. “Informatica sees CEP as an extremely high growth market. Together we have the technology suite that is necessary and able to address this market.
