A group of top IT executives on August 10 will present a series of in-depth case studies on data center best practices at the Data Center Exchange Expo, which is being produced by the editors of the Data Center Exchange.

The sessions promise to provide attendees with practical tips on data center optimization, virtualization, security, sustainability, energy efficiency, cloud computing, and best practices in data center management.

The Data Center Exchange Expo couldn’t come at a better time. Data center managers today face any number of challenges, from justifying costs, to consolidating data centers, to contingency planning and backup and recovery.

And, as corporate America emerges from the economic slump, more demands are being placed on data center facilities to not only continue managing cost, but to also support new growth initiatives, according to IT research company Gartner, which in May released a report titled "Moving IT From a Cost-Cutting to an Entrepreneurial Mind-Set.”

To help IT executives meet the challenges, high-level data center executives -- including Nasdaq senior vice president of IT Carl-Magnus Hallberg, WellSpan VP and chief technology officer Buddy Gillespie, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center VP or IT transformation Paul Sikora, Allstate AVP of infrastructure services Sandy Figurski, and the City of Los Angeles’ CTO Randi Levin -- will detail how their organizations are overcoming the biggest data center obstacles.

Allstate’s Figurski will open the event with a “big picture” presentation on how to optimize the data center. Allstate recently opened one of the most advanced -- and greenest -- data centers in the country.

WellSpan’s Gillespie will discuss the integrated health system’s experiences in implementing the Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) set of best practices to improve the organization’s service-level management and better manage costs.

UPMC’s Sikora will detail how the hospital system’s IT department -- recognized as one the nation’s most advanced -- transformed its data center infrastructure and now runs 95% of all its systems in a heavily virtualized environment.

Nasdaq’s Hallberg will tell attendees how the Nasdaq exchange secures and sustains one the most information-intensive IT environments today.

And LA’s Levin will give a status report on the city’s migration into the cloud -- one of the most-talked about cloud computing deployments.

The presentations will be live and accessible to anyone with a web browser and Internet access. Attendees will be able to ask questions of the speakers and be able to link up and exchange questions, experiences, and tips with other attendees.
