September 1, 2009 – IBM announced a public cloud service designed to give users a new way to manage desktop infrastructures through a centrally managed computing environment.

According to Gartner, the worldwide hosted virtual desktop market is expected to grow through 2013, and revenue is expected accelerate from about $1.3 billion to $1.5 billion in 2009 alone.

Brian Gammage, vice president and Gartner fellow was quoted in a company release to say that hosted virtual desktops are the most visible of alternative architectures and their adoption is likely to increase significantly in the next three to five years, particularly in mature markets where existing data center and network infrastructures will be used to offset the cost of entry.

IBM Smart Business Desktop virtualizes desktop computing resources. Paired with the company’s cloud subscription service it offers a number of delivery models to provide a logical method of data access and storage capacity, including dedicated infrastructure and customer premise solutions, according to a company release.

IBM plans to make the IBM Smart Business Desktop on the IBM Cloud service available in North America and Europe starting October 2009.
