February 16, 2010 – EMC Corporation introduced the latest version of Atmos, including the addition GeoProtect to its on-premise cloud storage platform.

EMC Atmos, version 1.3, is an internal platform designed to automatically manage and distribute data across large-scale, globally dispersed cloud infrastructures.

Though confusion about how to define the cloud persists, spending on cloud computing has experienced a substantial boost with the recession functioning as a catalyst. Spending on cloud computing is expected accelerate, capturing 25 percent of IT spending growth in 2012, according to research from IDC last fall.

Those businesses looking leverage global could infrastructures will require significant levels of scale and efficiency for their unstructured content, Benjamin Woo, vice president of worldwide storage systems for market research firm IDC was quoted to say.

“The new EMC Atmos software and hardware enhancements give customers the flexibility and scale they need to protect their information cost effectively,” said Woo. “Atmos extends EMC's information infrastructure and gives customers flexible choices in how they manage their unstructured data.”

GeoProtect is designed to allow users to select the appropriate performance and protection levels for content and avoid replication through erasure coding – allowing the object to be divided into multiple segments for fewer storage requirements and greater replication resiliency, according to the company release.

In addition, the Atmos policy engine can be set to reduce the number of copies archived as the content diminishes in value.
