What you just mentioned is very true Elliot. Unfortunately, today the demand lies more for programmers than scientists. Companies out there in the real world need people who can code in Hadoop, Pig, Hive, Matlab,R, SAS but what they are definitely missing out on is to look for people who have the ability to look at data and figure out the best way of utilizing it to solve business problems. These are the people who can tell you what technique for data mining/mathematics you should use to mine data. It is the case with more than 60% of companies who want to utilize big data. They are ready to implement but probably don't know what to implement
