Portal Serves Cancer Survivors

Moffitt Cancer Center is phasing in a patient portal that strives to provide personalized medicine fueled by a robust data warehouse and business intelligence technology.

The ongoing effort to implement the cancer survivorship portal is in recognition of “cancer becoming more like a chronic illness managed throughout a lifetime” because of advances in treatment, says Paul Jacobsen, who chairs Moffitt’s department of health outcomes and behavior.

The 162-bed hospital in Tampa has launched a Total Cancer Care program supported by a variety of technologies as well as genetic mapping. So far, the new portal provides a summary of treatment based on data in an electronic health record; offers a “survivorship care plan” with recommendations for further tests and procedures; and offers targeted education based on a wealth of information about the patient’s condition.

Within about two years, the portal will offer numerous other functions, including communication with clinicians and the ability to share data with primary care physicians, Jacobsen says.

Moffitt’s ultimate goal is to combine I.T., clinical treatment and research to support personalized cancer care using evidence-based guidelines, says Lance Caranante, director of business and financial systems. The data warehouse, for example, extracts data from numerous systems to fuel the portal. It also enables clinicians to make sophisticated queries to support outcomes research.

The Moffitt executives made their comments April 5 at the HIMSS Conference in Chicago.
