Talend announced Wednesday it would bundle Talend Open Studio for Big Data, its Apache-license integration for large data sets, with both previously announced versions of Hortonworks Data Platform (HDP) as part of a partnership agreement. HDP v1 leverages the first generation release of Apache Hadoop and HDP v2 includes the latest MapReduce architecture. Talend touted the bundle deal as a method for accelerating adoption of Apache Hadoop with eased movement of data to and from enterprise systems.
That announcement came a day after a development agreement between Microsoft and Hadoop. Microsoft stated it is developing a connector for Excel users to download and analyze output from the open source big data frame work, as well as a JavaScript framework for programs to tap into Hadoop data and patches to run Hadoop on Windows Server.

Among other data management and big data announcements during the second day of the conference:
- Calpont Corporation released the next generation of its MPP analytic database, InfiniDB 3, with a wider variety of capabilities with data structures and deployment variations.
- YarcData, the recently established enterprise big data solutions division of supercomputing provider Cray Inc., launched YarcData uRiKA, a purpose-built data graphing appliance.
The conference kicked off Tuesday with announcements of a partnership between Pentaho and DataStax for native integration of Pentaho Kettle and Cassandra, the release of 1010data’s Micro-Segmentation Wizard tool for dissecting massive consumer transaction databases, and the release of BI provider Jaspersoft’s BI industry Big Data Index rankings.
Speakers Tuesday included Alistair Croll, founder of emerging tech research firm Bitcurrent, who explored rising importance of big data and its vertical applications changing every industry, giving Netflix’s dominance of stalwart Blockbuster as an example. In line with the conference theme of “Making Data Work,” Croll loosely defined big data as large amounts of information from both public and private sources that are somehow linked, but acknowledged that the buzz term is “kind of like modern art: I know what it is when I see it.”
