The Power7 systems are intended, for instance, to handle real-time analytics in financial markets, where complex events and massive streams of market data are dealt with constantly in high-frequency and other forms of securities trading.
In addition, the new systems enable clients to manage current applications and services at lower cost through virtualization, better use of memory and less consumption of energy.
The Power systems can manage millions of transactions in real time and analyze the associated volumes of data typical of financial markets.
The new systems and management software include:
- IBM Power 780 servers, with as many as 64 processors each and software that smoothes out work loads
- IBM Power 770 servers, with as many as 64 Power 7 processors replacing lower performance Power6 processors in the line of servers being replaced
- IBM Power 755, a “computing cluster node” with 32 Power7 processors at its core
- IBM Power 750 Express, for “mid-market” customers, providng four times the processing capacity of its predecessor, the IBM Power 550 Express
- Management software including IBM Systems Director Express, Standard and Enterprise Editions, which simplify control of the new systems including making a “systems pool” of multiple Power servers that can be managed as one entity.
- The Power 750 Express and 755 should ship on February 19. The Power 770 and 780 should ship March 16. The IBM Systems Director Editions are to go to market on March 5.
