July 15, 2009 – BMC Software has announced that it is leveraging Amazon Web Services to provide a single, unified management solution meant to give customers control over existing internal IT assets and external cloud infrastructures, according to a company release.
Using BMC’s Business Service Management platform, IT organizations will be able to extend their internal data centers to Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2). Common uses cases for the new platform include approaches to IT planning, control, compliance, automation and management to manage IT infrastructure deployments via Amazon EC2. Enterprise customers can request computing resources – either internal or external from Amazon EC2 – through an integrated self-service portal. And, requests are tracked through BMC’s change management system and automatically provisioned and configured, according to the BMC statement.
Many large enterprises are exploring the merits of extending their service-enabled, virtualized and automated environments to cloud infrastructure services.
“Cloud-based infrastructure services are expected to see significant adoption through 2013,” said Ben Pring, research vice president for Gartner, in a report that forecast revenue from cloud infrastructure delivered as a service to reach $3.2 billion in 2009. “This segment probably has the largest range of possible outcomes, depending on how aggressively cloud computing is embraced by the major outsourcing vendors and their customers.”
Despite growth prospects for infrastructure services, last week Mark Smith, CEO and senior vice president of research and advisory services at Ventana Research, cautioned against removing IT participation in hybrid software and cloud computing initiatives.
“IT has not been very engaged into how to support the efficient data integration needs across cloud computing environments. This is required to address the business pressure for IT to help better deliver better analytics and business intelligence, all of which is not easy when you have data operating across many cloud computing environments outside of the internal IT premises,” Smith wrote.
BMC, however, is emphasizing the integrated role of IT and incorporation of internal infrastructure with the cloud in today’s announcement. More information is available here.
