Nice piece on the need to have ALL of the affected stakeholders at the table for the development of a proper governance strategy. Chris's point that an ongoing data governance body is critical shouldn't be underestimated. I would add that most data governance I have seen ends up as a policy paper gathering dust on the shelf. Useless except it can be pointed to as, "yes, we have a data governance policy". The rules of governance pertain to all walks of life (families, civil society, workplace, data), and the lessons are transferable. If the rules are not monitored with some associated consequence for non-compliance (imagine our highways if we knew their were neither police nor judges) there would be anarchy. Too many rules and too much monitoring creates a police state which is both expensive to maintain and stifles creativity. Each organization, family or culture, must establish common rules for those who govern, and those who are governed, based on what works best for them.

Auditing is such a big aspect of proper data governance. Security and sensitivity of data in view of all the major breaches takes an even greater significance. The onus is squarely on involving all possible worst-case scenarios and dedicating enough time and budget to it, without considering it as a feature or funds guzzler. Cutting through the internet security threat fog has no other way (goo.gl/ew2TsV)
