Symantec Combines Cloud Storage With Data Deduplication

Symantec announced this week a new cloud storage service as well as a deduplication appliance.

The Mountain View, Calif.-based company said the two new offerings are part of its Information Management Strategy, aimed at giving organizations the tools to protect information in physical or virtual environments, while deduplicating data in all environments.

The NetBackup 5000 appliance is being billed as a scalable deduplication technology with the capability of deduplicating up to 4.3 terabytes of data per hour. Symantec also says the appliance can potentially offer organizations up to 50 times more storage savings than using a traditional backup solution.

The NetBackup Cloud Storage service combines the NetBackup offering with cloud storage services from Nirvanix, a San Diego, Calif.-based cloud storage provider. Users of NetBackup have the ability to select cloud storage as an option for backup and recovery, or use the system to establish the cloud as a new storage tier.

“Most businesses are seeing their data stores grow by about 50 percent annually and the impact of storage costs has pushed IT departments to their limits,” Brian Dye, vice president of product management in Symantec’s information management group, said in a statement.

“By extending the benefits of Symantec NetBackup through appliance and cloud delivery models, we are helping our customers reduce complexity and cost without putting an organization’s infrastructure, information and intellectual property at risk.”

Symantec said NetBackup 5000 and the NetBackup connector for Nirvanix are available now in select countries.
