January 30, 2012 – BMC Software announced Monday it has made a deal to buy mid-market IT management solution provider Numara Software.

Numara offers integrated service and asset management solutions and services primarily to small to mid-sized businesses. In a news release on the proposed deal, BMC stated that Numara’s solutions add a new layer of on-premise and service offerings for SMBs to its SaaS portfolio.

Two of those offerings from Numara – FootPrints and Track-It! – will continue to be supported by BMC, and called them “complimentary” solutions with its existing portfolio.  BMC made no mention of the future of Numara’s other solutions and services. BMC stated that FootPrints and Track-It! will be part of a continual development of its business service management platform, including its existing IT management SaaS, BMC Remedyforce Service Desk.

BMC president of enterprise service management Paul Avenant said in a news release on the deal that adding Numara will “round out” BMC’s IT customer care and support offerings.

Eveline Oehrlich, Forrester Research Principal Analyst, joined her colleagues in a blog that called the proposed deal a “golden opportunity” for BMC to build a long-term revenue stream from mid-market offerings, which she says the vendor made missteps with in a previous acquisition of Magic Solutions. Oehrlich says that BMC and Numara have complementary offerings and organizational cultures, pointing to a “positive step” with product development and services for existing and new customers.

Based in Tampa, Florida, Numara was founded in 1991 as Blue Ocean Software and acquired by Intuit in 2002. Numara counts 13,000 customers worldwide for its solutions, according to its website.

Financial details of the proposed deal were not disclosed, though it still requires customary approvals. BMC spokesperson Kasey Holman says more information will be revealed Wednesday during its vendor’s earnings call to recap its fiscal year ending Jan. 31.
