SAP is preparing to unveil a new cloud platform, code-named “River,” that will support lightweight extensions to its core enterprise resource planning (ERP) applications.

In media interviews, the company’s chief technology officer Vishal Sikka, said the company will be segmenting its cloud strategy across multiple platforms, including River and a separate platform for its BusinessByDesign on-demand software.

The first River application, called Carbon Impact 5.0, is expected to be unveiled next month, an IDG article reported. Carbon Impact would run on Amazon’s Elastic Compute Cloud platform. SAP said it chose to work with Amazon because of its early expertise in the cloud computing arena.

SAP is developing its own applications to populate River, but over time, it expects to open the platform to partners.

The company is also working simultaneously on the development of a cloud computing platform to power its BusinessByDesign on-demand ERP strategy.
