The Linux Foundation, a non-profit standardization and collaboration consortium for the open source coding basis, announced its inaugural cloud computing technical conference, CloudOpen. Held August 29-31 in San Diego in conjunction with its LinuxCon North America event, CloudOpen is meant to bring commercial competitors together toward a shared, open source understanding of the impacts driving the cloud and big data environments. The CloudOpen agenda includes executives and evangelists from Eucalyptus Systems, Citrix, IBM, Red Hat, Dell, as well as Linux Fondation VP Amanda McPherson.
In a blog post on the upcoming event, McPherson acknowledged that there is “no shortage” of cloud events, though there are few that plan to unite developers working in the fast emerging on-demand space, particularly in such aspects as data policies and APIs.
“The cloud and the open source technologies that comprise it are now reaching the point of maturity that this collaboration can truly benefit users. Cloud infrastructure choice is also reaching the point of proliferation that users need to have a place to educate themselves on "open" as it relates to the cloud,” McPherson wrote. Established in 2000, Linux Foundation members include IBM, Fujitsu, Oracle, Cisco, HP, NetApp and Google.
A day prior to the event announcement, Linux Foundation added five more members from Japan, including Ashisuto and NTT Data.
