IBM Corp. has acquired Datacap Inc., a vendor of document imaging and management technology serving health care and several other industries, for an undisclosed sum.

Datacap's imaging system enables the extraction of unstructured information in e-mail files, JPEG and GIF image files and PowerPoint presentations into usable data, according to the Tarrytown, N.Y.-based vendor. Its health care clients include BlueCross BlueShield of Arizona, Chicago Department of Public Health, and St. Vincent Hospital and Health Care Center in Indianapolis, among others.

Armonk, N.Y.-based IBM will integrate Datacap's technology into its enterprise content management business. IBM in announcing the acquisition highlighted its ability to provide increased services in the health care, insurance, government and finance sectors.
