In its announcement, IBM trumpeted data warehouse queries that were five-to-10 times faster in DB2 version 10 than running those same workloads in version 9 of the software, in addition to instant data compression and assessments of data use for storage efficiency. Big data management takes a role in the updated version in the form of integration and real-time analysis of unstructured sources and Hadoop-based systems, according to an IBM news release. Version 10 also features an increase in the number of concurrent users, added security, and enhancements to schema and query performance management.
IBM also updated InfoSphere Warehouse 10 software with access to Hadoop processing as well as settings to regularly revise data. Both updates to InfoSphere and DB2 include security and availability updates, as well.
Arvind Krishna, general manager for IBM Information Management, said in a release on the software revamps that is a primary goal in the new functionality surrounds finding decisions in growing data volumes.
“IBM has advanced database and data warehouse technology to the point where data management can be automated and insights shared more broadly than ever before, freeing up decision makers and IT staff to focus on business growth,” said Krishna.
IBM stated in an announcement on both releases that hundreds of clients, business partners and experts from its Research and Software Development Labs worked together to develop the update the new database software over the last four years. There was also an air of competition in the announcements, as IBM’s releases and even a white paper pointed out its differentiating aspects from recent data processing releases by Oracle.
Both products will be generally available at the end of April.
