Hewlett-Packard released the fifth version of its Vertica big data analytics software, this time including cloud enablement features allowing users to create additional capacity, as needed.

Vertica, which HP acquired in February, offers software that analyzes data on massive scales. The latest version of the software, Vertica 5.0, offers a C++ software development kit that provides users with the ability to customize and insert customer and case-specific query logic into the Vertica database for parallel execution.

It also features enhanced clustering and cloning capabilities for on-demand creation of Vertica databases to create capacity “auto-sized” to demand, whether in a physical, virtual or cloud environment.

“With this latest release of the Vertica Analytics Platform, we’ve focused on performance, manageability and extensibility for our customers,” Shilpa Lawande, vice president of engineering for Vertica, said in a statement. “Our new SDK [software development kit] empowers users, developers and partners to create custom analytics that can be called via a standard SQL query.”

Vertica 5.0 is available immediately and will soon be available as part of the HP converged infrastructure stack. In March, HP CEO Apotheker outlined the company’s vision for a seamless, secure, connected world, where on-premise proprietary computing resources are complemented or replaced by the massive computing resources available in the cloud.

At the time Apotheker said HP’s acquisition of Vertica would play a key role in the company’s cloud strategy.
