The software development will center on what GE calls the “Industrial Internet,” those infrastructure solutions that run and migrate data. And innovation in infrastructure solutions is expected to address real-time and predictive offerings, especially around industry-specific unstructured data access, according to a news release on the new headquarters and software development initiatives.
GE Vice President Bill Ruh, who will lead the new software initiative, said the push will in part involved connecting more than 5,000 GE software professionals to develop offerings for “pressing” challenges like those in dealing with data volumes at power plants, supply chains and health care systems and research.
“Our goal today is to develop a new generation of intelligent systems that can predict and respond to changes. These digital offerings will harness and automatically analyze the petabytes of data that are generated by industrial equipment to help our customers get the most value from their assets,” Ruh said in a news release. “All of this activity will occur on the 'Industrial Internet,' a living network of intelligent machines and systems.”
Mark Little, CTO and senior VP at GE, said in a news release that the range of existing operations from the industrial tech corporation will factor into capabilities and development in this new software venture, which involves GE’s industrial innovation laboratory, GE Global Research.
GE developers – including about 400 new hires in the areas of software architecture, business development and user experience – are expected to move into GE’s Global Software Center in San Ramon, Calif. by mid-2012, according to a news release.
Along with the new development headquarters, GE has opened two other software operations in the past two years: the Advanced Manufacturing and Software Technology Center near Detroit, which works on GE’s internal operations, and the Information Security Technology Center near Richmond, Va., which specializes in cybersecurity and data management.
