CloudSwitch, a company that bills itself as the enterprise gateway to the cloud, has teamed with Riverbed Technology to improve the performance of applications hosted in the cloud.

The companies announced CloudSwitch will support the Riverbed Cloud Steelhead offering, a platform for improving application performance and reducing latency and bandwidth constraints in cloud environments.

CloudSwitch provides a set of software appliances that can run on VMware or Xen virtual machine environments. The technology simplifies the porting of enterprise applications to the cloud and allows for the extension of enterprise security and controls.

“Our customers and prospects have prioritized requirements for optimized network performance as they launch and scale their cloud initiatives,” John McEleney, CloudSwitch chief executive officer, said in a statement. “Many of our customers have already invested in Riverbed infrastructure in their data centers and want to extend these trusted resources into the cloud.”

Riverbed has been busy forming partnerships with cloud point solution providers to extend the functionality of its offering. It announced it now offers validated technical compatibility with cloud service providers Terremark, ZettaServe and Xtium, in addition to providing integration with offerings from CloudSwitch and Media Platform. Riverbed previously announced compatibility with Amazon’s Web services.
