March 28, 2012 – Cisco announced Wednesday its intent to acquire ClearAccess, a privately held provider of mobile device app and video management software and hardware.

ClearAccess provides TR-069 software to broadband service providers for management and provisioning of mobile devices. Cisco stated in a news release that the addition of ClearAccess’ network management and software would go toward addressing the rise in mobile devices and their users’ consumption of data, particularly video and other unstructured content.

In addition, Jamie Lerner, VP and general manager at Cisco, said in a news release on the proposed deal that ClearAccess offerings deepen Cisco’s capabilities for “accelerating software architectural advancements in mobility, cloud and managed devices, and video."

"ClearAccess provides a critical technology that will advance Cisco's mission to offer service providers a complete set of tools to manage their networks, within the home and across any connected device, amid the ongoing proliferation in network traffic," said Lerner.

Cisco stated that the hardware portion of ClearAccess’ business, Smart RG Gateways, would continue operations as SmartRG Inc.

Based in Vancouver, Washington, ClearAccess was founded by executives with backgrounds in the telecommunications industry and already counted Cisco as a software partner. Financial details of the deal were not disclosed.

Less than two weeks ago, Cisco also announced a deal for video software and content security solution provider NDS Group Ltd.
