CapGemini Forms Cloud Consulting Unit

Consulting powerhouse CapGemini has formed a new business unit aimed at capturing a share of what it predicts will be a strong global demand for cloud computing services.

The new unit, called Infostructure Transformation Services, is targeted at helping organizations re-engineer their infrastructure so they can take advantage of cloud computing and related services.

Paris-based CapGemini said the initiative will help organizations to position themselves to “exploit the new consumption based models of cloud computing and cost-effectively create differentiation through the emergent cloud services environment which radically changes the way organizations assemble solutions.”

The Infostructure unit will be separated into four distinct offerings, each designed to help organizations transition to the cloud: data center optimization, virtualization, unified communications and collaboration, and cloud computing and services

“CIOs are under pressure to deliver sustainable cost-reduction whilst providing value-for-money opportunities for growth and differentiation,” said David Boulter, CapGemini’s vice president for the Infostructure unit, in a statement announcing the initiative. “New business models are disrupting the manner in which computing capability is deployed and procured. Perhaps more importantly the explosion of new cloud services creates the notion of the ‘Enterprise Apps Store’ which we believe will fundamentally change the means by which companies assemble solutions.”

CapGemini said the cloud initiative represents the fourth stage of a major growth initiative it unveiled in November of 2009. The company aims to generate €800 million ($1.1 billion) in new bookings in 2010.

While not as well known in the U.S., CapGemini has operations in more than 30 countries, employs 90,000 worldwide and had revenues of €8.4 billion ($11.4 billion) in 2009.
