The company recently introduced new offerings that it says position the System z mainframe to handle greater workloads, such as data analytics and collaborative application development, and improved performance.
The 10 new software products are on top of a recent announcement by IBM of seven integrated hardware, software and services packages – called IBM System z Solution Editions – which are designed to help customers deploy enterprise class workloads, such as data warehousing, electronic payments and disaster recovery.
Industry watchers have long forecast the death of the mainframe, but companies have been reluctant to move away from the stable, robust platform. IBM, in turn, has been promoting the use of the mainframe as a way to slow server sprawl and simplify management.
“The unique ability of the mainframe to host many application services on one system has helped System z achieve one of the industry’s lowest application costs per user,” IBM said in a statement announcing the product launch. “Minimal application costs are important for companies which rely on multiple applications to run their business.”
The new products include:
IMS 11, which provides direct SQL access to IMS data from any distributed platform. The product is designed to speed the process of connecting applications and data, while also making it easier to replicate data.
New WebSphere products to enhance business process management, connectivity and integration. They include the WebSphere Process Server for z/OS, the WebSphere ILOG Business Rule Management System, the WebSphere MQ for z/OS, and the WebSphere Message Broker for z/OS.
