2009 is gone - and good riddance. Here's hoping that 2010 will be a significant improvement over the last year.

Perhaps I'm being a little harsh in retrospect. After all, as Ventana Research pointed out in their look back at 2009, it wasn't a completely terrible year. The research firm notes that 2009 saw the beginnings of a "shift from merely managing technology to managing information for business value." Their recap points out that innovation has expanded the scope and use of business intelligence. The use of BI previously reserved for statisticians and tech-savvy analysts is now spreading through the organization. Technologies such as operational intelligence, complex event processing and increased use of real-time data are improving decision-making throughout the enterprise.

Ventana says 2009 "will be remembered as the first in which organizations began to shift their attitudes from viewing information as a technology-mediated commodity managed by specialists to treating information as a unique and important corporate asset." If they are right, it means, all in all, information management now has momentum and recognition beyond what it experienced in the past.

It's not to say we didn't see it coming when we changed the name of our brand one year ago, but it is rewarding. At long last, information is finally appreciated and can be treated as the valuable asset it is.

Information Management always brings you the best editorial content we can offer to help you do your job as an information professional. But we also know community is a two-way street.

We have a network of knowledgeable consultants and analysts involved in our discussion boards to share their insights and comment on your questions and experiences. We have respected bloggers committed to sharing observations and stirring up a little controversy now and then. We have feature articles to educate you, case studies to inspire you and interviews to connect you with the more personal side of information workers. We're always adding white papers for your edification and customer-written product reviews to share tips. We're drilling deeper with our topical channels on info-mgmt.com and specialized data center and cloud computing microsites.

Whatever the coming year brings, our efforts will be focused on connecting you with the best people and information we can drum up. Enjoy!
