While very few executives expect a rapid return to 2007 performance levels, revenue growth has replaced cost cutting as the top priority in large private- sector organizations. In 2010, 71 percent of executives say their focus will be on improving revenues; just 10 percent do not expect to reemphasize growth until after 2011.
The results will impact IT portfolios and should help IT managers plan and budget for the coming year. Gartner reports that now is a good time for CIOs to engage business leaders who are "gasping for growth" and have an improving attitude toward IT's ability to contribute. More than 40 percent of respondents plan to increase IT investments in 2010.
"Business leaders see a landscape of change and they see IT as playing a significant role," says Gartner Research Vice President Mark Raskino. "Most of them are going to be grinding out growth; it's there, but it's going to be difficult."
The study sampled 190 senior executives, including 81 CEOs at U.S. and U.K. companies with revenues of more than $1 billion. More information is available at Gartner.com.
