There are typically two kinds of standards: ones that are forced upon an industry, whether by the dominance of a vendor or governmental decree; and the ones that are agreed-upon by the best and brightest. One could argue that REST is in the latter category. Increasingly, instead of SOAP (Simple Object Access Protocol), REST (Representational State Transfer) has become the de facto standard for accessing data.
