The vast majority of data warehouses are built using row stores that are optimized for transactional rather than analytical processes. Columnar databases often outperform relational stores by orders of magnitude in analytical performance. So, why aren’t column stores more popular for reporting and analysis?

Signs are pointing to renewed popularity for columnar databases, as evidenced by new players in the market and a resurgence of some venerable platforms. Tune into this episode of DM Radio to learn why column stores are making a comeback. We’ll talk to the experts who’ve been evangelizing the columnar database for years, including: Irfan Khan, CTO of Sybase; Dr. Michael Stonebraker, architect of the modern INGRES and POSTGRES database designs, and CTO/Founder of Vertica; and David Raab, of Raab Associates.

Attendees will learn: · The business benefits of column-stores and row-stores; · The pros and cons of each approach; · Optimal use cases for column-stores; · Optimal use cases for row-stores; · Why the column-store is still not as popular as the row-store.
