An engineer at Sun Microsystems describes database tuning for multiple databases, in contrast to the product-specific guides that are most common. Identifying aspects that are common across the major products, he considers such topics as database concepts, hardware architecture, the buffer cache, and the optimizer. He uses the Solaris Operating Environment, but says the principles and much of the detail should also apply to other UNIX systems.
