Why Doesn’t Governance Lead to Data Freedom?

Well Michele, you're absolutely right about the business being in the lead and the business defining the rules and quality. But is this not kicking in an open door, or at least it should be. But I'm afraid you're right to say it so clear and loud; as most IT departments are not willing to let control go just as most business people are reluctant to take control

I dont know that it is kicking an open door. I do see the business more and more at the table. Yet I dont see wide spread ownership and responsibility for the data. They will provide answers to questions, but then often delegate to a quasi IT steward (someone that sits in the business unit but still technical) rather than incorporating data governance as part of doing business. Evidence is the number of business data stewards that migrate to IT. Data Governance is still often another operational silo. It is not to say that it doesnt always work this way. The point is that as big data disrupts the information landscape and there is more external sources, how we go about data governance is not going to be sustainable in the long run until we accunt for both what we are free to do as well as the business bringing the data team to the table and not the other way around.
