I got a chance to examine Starview and their technology called Starview Smart Enterprise Platform to see how they are approaching Operational Intelligence with their unique approach to CEP as they have been promoting the importance of their distributed technology architecture and how they have used their agent-oriented rules language called StarRules for applying simple to sophisticated analytics. Their approach which truly represents how many global organizations operate with people and processes around the world operating across every major geography and time-zone. Now the implications of how organizations operate is the need to have local event processing that can processed in what they call remote agents that can perform necessary processing before sending them into what they call their enterprise hub where additional processing can be performed. This approach is critical as the nature of events from disparate systems has been a challenge in many industries including energy, communications, manufacturing and retail that have a need for distributed processing.
The other capability that is critical for testing the processing and improvements is the need to run simulations on real or historical events to process them for specific business and technical purposes. Starview has these capabilities that can play a critical role in ensuring the successful processing of events and knowledge on where to optimize business activities and not just monitor them. Earlier this year I pointed out the limitations of business activity monitoring (BAM) (See: “The Dead End for Business Activity Monitoring (BAM)“). Starview has developed deployment scenarios of their technology for utility and manufacturing industries.
Starview went a couple of steps further to manage the processing of events across a distributed environment and extensions of their technology for monitoring and processing events as agents that are closest to the creation of the events. Of course the challenge for Starview is to expand their front end business user capability to provide the range of deployments necessary and simplicity for access and notification to relevant information.
Starview Technology with the architecture and technology to manage events across distributed environment where they can be processed close to their creation across different geographies or areas of an organization has great potential. This approach is part of the demand for CEP as part of Operational Intelligence is heating up (See: “Operational Intelligence Requires Complex Event Processing (CEP)“) and I expect this new category of technology to be like BI was in the 90s where the range of technology vendors for organizations and opportunity will continue to grow as the demand continues to grow significantly. All of this should be an opportunity for Starview Technology to grow as the market looks for dedicated technology providers in this category of Operational Intelligence.
