Good points... Group dynamics can be problematic. The key to developing a performance focus is to insure that the project has a vision statement. An elevator speech that has line of sight to supporting the business.

A question that should be asked ALL THE TIME is, "Why are we doing this". It is the leader's position to constantly define the WHY and keep vision focused there. As in college rowing an 8 person crew (as in the Olympics), everyone has to pull together and stay in sync. To do that they employ a coxswain who provides rythm by signalling the crew to row on command. Without the coxswain the boat would not perform as desired.

The leader should always be engaged through active listening, providing the needed resources, directing team effort, insulating the team from distraction (particularly from above) by running interference, and keeping the vision focused.
