This latest SMR newsletter is a great "marketing" piece written by IBM. Of course we all know there is nothing free in this world so the fact that this newsletter is free should cause one to be careful as to the potential for bias. The key points to consider while reading this article are the cautions: correlation is not causation, which I take to mean that using analytics does not necessarily result in business success nor is it a prerequisite to business success. Another key point is also stated and that is that the capabilities and culture of the organization is the key to the use of analytics. So some organizations maybe successful without becoming analytics sophisticates. As far as the data deluge is concerned the best analogy is that of the file cabinet where history shows only 10% of the data is considered of value, no one knows which 10%. Analytics sophistication don't make a company more successful, the people do! Data is inanimate and conveys no knowledge until a human is there to interpret the data. I would suggest investing in people first, they are the true sophisticates in analytics. The technology is just plumbing.
